Eurostar Horror: Passengers Stranded for 8 Hours in Darkness
Eurostar travellers heading from London St Pancras to Amsterdam via Brussels were left stranded at Folkestone for nearly eight hours in a nightmare delay. A snapped overhead power cable sparked chaos, plunging the train into darkness with no electricity, food, water, or working toilets.
Electrical Fault Sparks Chaos Near Channel Tunnel
The drama unfolded just as the 8:16 am train approached the Channel Tunnel. Passengers heard sparks and loud bangs before the train came to a grinding halt. Toilet facilities quickly became unusable, flooding with urine, faeces, and even cigarettes — making conditions increasingly desperate on board.
Passengers Vent Anger as Eurostar Scrambles to Respond
Stranded travellers took to Twitter to vent frustration as Eurostar initially blamed a train disconnecting from the overhead power lines. The fix, however, took much longer than expected, leaving many stuck for hours without vital supplies.
“It’s been eight hours with no food or water. Why has nothing been done?” one angry passenger asked online.
Rebecca Morris from Horsham, West Sussex, said: “We got water but no food. It was dreadful and freezing cold.” Her group had been en route to the Christmas markets in Brussels.
Eurostar Apologises for ‘Very Challenging’ Situation
Eurostar later issued a formal apology, acknowledging the “very challenging situation on board” and expressing deep regret for the ordeal. They confirmed the affected train was returning to London but cited the tricky train position and track issues as complicating factors.
This incident highlights the urgent need for rail operators to maintain and inspect crucial infrastructure rigorously. Passengers’ safety and comfort must remain a priority, especially during unforeseeable disruptions.
