Chaos in Bristol: Police Van Targeted During Kill the Bill Protest

Violence erupted at Sunday’s Kill the Bill demonstration in Bristol, with protesters turning on police officers and a vehicle caught in the crossfire.

Officer Uses Van as Human Shield

Avon and Somerset Police revealed that a driver deliberately moved a van to protect colleagues who were under attack. The officer described hearing screams and shouting amid the chaos.

“A call was made for vehicles to assist officers,” said the officer. “The only way to protect my colleagues was to place the vehicle side on in front of them to offer protection.”

Rocks, Bottles, and Firebombs Thrown

The situation quickly escalated. Officers faced a barrage of glass bottles and fist-sized rocks hurled their way. Several individuals tried to break into the locked van as tensions soared.

Then, things turned even more dangerous. The officer reported smelling burning while still inside the vehicle.

“I was aware of the smell of burning and CCTV showed people attempting to set the vehicle tyres alight with me still in it,” the officer said.

Arrests Made as Police Hunt Suspects

Footage caught a lit item being placed under the van, sparking fears the vehicle would be set ablaze. Police have since released an image of a man they want to question about the incident.

  • Eight people, aged 20-44, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
  • One man faces charges for possession of an offensive weapon.
  • Those arrested have been released pending further inquiries.

The violent scenes have put Bristol on edge as authorities vow to get to the bottom of the chaotic protest.
