Ex-Met Police Rapist Sees Sentence Slammed and Extended
Cliff Mitchell, a former Metropolitan Police officer convicted of repeatedly raping a woman and a child, tried to appeal his life sentence. But instead of cutting it, the court slammed him with a longer minimum term – now 17 years and 225 days behind bars.
From Life to Even Longer: Appeal Backfires Horribly
Mitchell, 24, was originally handed life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years and 225 days for 10 counts of rape and three counts of raping a child under 13. He claimed the sentence was “manifestly excessive” and sought an appeal. However, the Solicitor General branded the original punishment “unduly lenient” and referred the case for review.
On July 25, judges at the Court of Appeal refused Mitchell’s bid for mercy. They extended his minimum term to 17 years and 225 days – crushing any hope for early release.
Victims Speak Out: Gut-Wrenching Impact Statements
During the trial, victims didn’t hold back. One told Mitchell bluntly, “You disgust me. I hope you suffer for the rest of your life.” Another called him “a pathetic excuse of a man.”
The court heard chilling details of Mitchell’s offences, including forcing a victim into his car. The terrified woman escaped by pretending to be sick, then bolted through heavy traffic before a passer-by rescued her. A desperate 999 call featured the victim crying, “He’s kidnapped me.”
Dark Past, Grim Present: From Police Officer to Convicted Rapist
Mitchell served as a Met police constable in Hounslow’s West Area Basic Command Unit when many of the horrific crimes were committed. Suspended after allegations surfaced, he was sacked in December 2023.
A 2017 rape investigation into Mitchell initially went nowhere. When arrested in 2023, more charges emerged, including rape offences spanning 2014 to 2017. These included three counts of raping a child under 13.
Victim statements at sentencing blasted Mitchell as a “serious danger to every woman walking the streets” and said he deserved to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The court also heard the lasting trauma suffered by the victims, many now battling PTSD and life-shattering struggles. Mitchell’s failed appeal and extended sentence make clear the justice system’s hard stance against his brutal crimes.
