Top Cop Would’ve Been Booted for Misconduct – But Quit Just in Time
Ex-West Yorkshire Chief Supt Caught in Inappropriate Relationship
Former West Yorkshire Police Chief Superintendent Daniel Greenwood was found guilty of gross misconduct for an improper relationship with a student officer from March 2019 to November 2021. A misconduct panel ruled on September 19, 2024, that Greenwood would have been dismissed if he hadn’t resigned just days earlier.
Abuse of Power Exposed
The independent panel slammed Greenwood for abusing his senior role, saying he exploited his position to pursue a relationship with a subordinate “for sexual purposes.”
Deputy Chief Constable Catherine Hankinson blasted Greenwood, saying, “Daniel Greenwood took full advantage of his senior position to pursue a wholly inappropriate relationship with a student officer.”
She added, “His behaviour brings discredit on the police service, goes against our values, and undermines public trust and confidence.”
Police Vow to Clean House
Hankinson reassured the public that West Yorkshire Police remains committed to high standards. “The public deserves officers who hold the highest standards,” she said. “His actions do not represent the overwhelming majority of honest and hardworking police officers and staff in West Yorkshire.”
She also emphasised, “All allegations of discreditable conduct will be robustly investigated, and such behaviour has no place in our service.”
Greenwood Barred from Police Force
Greenwood resigned on September 17, just two days before the panel’s ruling. As a result of the findings, he will be placed on the police barred list, ending any chance of him returning to law enforcement.
