Hastings Man Found Guilty of Brutal Attack on 77-Year-Old Pensioner
A Hastings lad, Joseph Charlott, 22, has been convicted of a savage assault on a 77-year-old pensioner that left the victim badly injured.
Violent Assault Leaves Pensioner Seriously Hurt
The shocking attack happened in May 2023 on Malvern Way, Hastings. Charlott forced his way into the pensioner’s motorhome and launched a vicious attack.
“When confronted by the owner, who called the police, Charlott responded with a flurry of violence, knocking the victim down and repeatedly kicking him while he lay helpless,” said Detective Sergeant Jake O’Reilly.
The pensioner suffered a fractured shoulder blade, ribs, and chest bone, requiring hospital treatment.
Charlott’s Troubles Began Before the Attack
- 24 hours before the assault, Charlott spat at an officer and was caught with a knuckleduster.
- He went on the run for three months after the assault.
- Police finally caught him in August after he tried to escape by jumping from a second-storey window.
Justice on the Horizon
Charlott was found guilty at Lewes Crown Court of grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, criminal damage, and assaulting an emergency worker. He was acquitted of one assault charge. Currently in custody, he faces sentencing on 18 November.
“This violence against a vulnerable man defending his property is indefensible,” said DS O’Reilly. “I thank the teams across Sussex Police who worked tirelessly to bring Charlott to justice. We hope the sentence will bring some closure to the victim.”
