Hero Cops Commended for Bravery After Knife Attack at Kids’ Taylor Swift Dance Class
Three Merseyside Police officers have been hailed as heroes for their incredible bravery during a terrifying mass stabbing at a children’s Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport.
Knife-Wielding Teen Terrorises Dance Class
On July 29, 2024, Sergeant Gregory Gillespie, PC Luke Holden, and PCSO Timothy Parry were first on the scene at The Hart Space on Hart Street, a local community hub and pregnancy care centre. What was meant to be a fun holiday dance event quickly turned into a nightmare when 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana from Banks, Lancashire, launched a brutal attack with a large knife.
The shocking attack claimed the lives of three young girls — Elsie Stancombe, Alice De Silva Aguiar, and Bebe King — making it one of Merseyside’s worst mass stabbings.
Cops Confront Killer, Save Lives
Armed with baton and Taser, Sgt Gillespie and PC Holden stormed the building, with PCSO Parry securing the exit. They confronted Rudakubana at the top of the stairs. Though the attacker dropped his weapon, the officers used force to detain him swiftly.
Rudakubana later admitted to 16 charges including three counts of murder and was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum 52-year term at Liverpool Crown Court in January 2025.
Bravery Awards and Community Mourning
The brave officers have now been nominated for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards, where their swift, fearless actions will be recognised on July 10.

In the days following the attack, hundreds gathered at a vigil outside Southport Town Hall to mourn the tragic loss of the young victims and pay tribute to a community shattered by violence.
