Crossbow Killer Shot Dead by Police in Surrey Quays
A tense stand-off in Surrey Quays ended with police fatally shooting Bryce Hodgson, 30, who was armed with a crossbow and a sword. An investigation has now cleared officers, ruling their use of force necessary and justified.
Armed Man Threatens Residents
On January 30, police rushed to a property on Bywater Place after reports of a man armed with crossbows and knives trying to break into a bedroom where residents had barricaded themselves in terror.
At 5:07 am, two officers forced entry, finding blood, broken glass, and arrows scattered near the front door. Hodgson appeared on the stairway and swung a sword at them, forcing the officers to retreat and call in armed response teams.
Firearms Officers Engage After Negotiation Fails
Despite attempts to negotiate, Hodgson threatened to harm people inside the property. When he aimed a loaded crossbow at officers, one fired two shots, hitting him in the neck and chest. Paramedics attempted first aid, but Hodgson died at the scene.
“This was a tragic incident where a man lost his life. Our sympathies are with Mr. Hodgson’s family and everyone affected,” said Mel Palmer, regional director of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). “However, the officers’ use of lethal force was justified, proportionate, and necessary.”
Man Had Previous Stalking Conviction
The investigation revealed Hodgson was previously convicted of stalking in July and placed under a five-year restraining order forbidding him from entering Bywater Place. The IOPC also reviewed how the Metropolitan Police managed Hodgson post-conviction.
Officers Hailed for Bravery
Commander Charmain Brenyah praised the officers for their professionalism and courage, saying: “They risked their lives to confront Mr. Hodgson and reduce the threat. They only withdrew after being advised, following repeated sword attacks. Their bravery protecting the community should never be underestimated.”
Weapons recovered included crossbows, a sword, a knife, and a hatchet, spotlighting how deadly the threat was. The probe underlines the vital role firearms officers play in protecting both the public and their unarmed colleagues from extreme dangers.
