Gas Leak Sparks Mass Evacuation in Croydon Flats
A major gas leak triggered chaos at Independence Court, Croydon, on Wednesday evening. Just before 6pm, emergency services rushed to the scene after residents reported a strong gas smell and carbon monoxide alarms sounded across multiple flats.
Firefighters and Police Lead Emergency Response
Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade teamed up with the Metropolitan Police to swiftly evacuate dozens of residents. People were shepherded to a newly set-up emergency rest centre nearby, where emergency planning officers arranged shelter and support for those affected.
Specialist Gas Teams Work to Isolate Dangerous Leak
Experts from Southern Gas Networks isolated the high-pressure gas main supplying the block and adjacent buildings to stop the leak. Police have also set up multiple cordons, urging everyone to steer clear of the area for safety and to let emergency crews get on with the job.
Metropolitan Police: “We advise drivers and pedestrians to avoid London Road near Independence Court while emergency work is ongoing.”
A formal update from the police is expected soon detailing the leak’s cause and how long the disruption will last.
