Life Behind Bars for Taxi Driver’s Killer in Solihull
Oliver Pugh, 20, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 27 years for the brutal murder of taxi driver Mohammed Istakhar in Solihull last November.
Taxi Driver Stabbed to Death After Fare Pick-Up
The 44-year-old victim was found gravely injured on Braggs Farm Road on November 29. Despite frantic attempts to save him, Mr. Istakhar died from his wounds.
The tragedy unfolded after Mr. Istakhar picked up Pugh and another man from Birmingham city centre. CCTV footage showed the pair chasing the driver down Lady Lane just half an hour later.
CCTV Reveals Shocking Details
- The two men were later seen returning to the taxi alone.
- As the taxi left the scene, an object believed to be the victim’s phone was thrown from the vehicle.
- The taxi stopped outside Pugh’s home where the men removed the vehicle’s livery and number plates.
- Police recovered the taxi for forensic analysis.
Killer Caught Hiding in Derbyshire Caravan
Pugh’s passport was found in the victim’s pocket. After a public appeal, police located Pugh hiding in a caravan in Derbyshire. Both Pugh and his accomplice denied involvement, blaming each other.
Detective Condemns ‘Horrific Attack’
“This was a horrific attack on a father who was out working that night to provide for his family,” said Detective Inspector Michelle Thurgood. “Earlier that evening, Pugh had assaulted other men for no reason. He was intent on causing harm.”
“Our thoughts remain with Mr. Istakhar’s family, and I hope this sentence can bring them some closure.”
The killer’s sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court closes a grim chapter in Solihull’s recent history.
