Northern Territory Man Busted for Possessing Child Abuse Material
A disturbing case has rocked Darwin as a 52-year-old Northern Territory man was hauled before court today, accused of possessing five counts of child abuse material. The bust came after the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) tipped off Australian authorities.
US Tip-Off Sparks Aussie Investigation
The NCMEC flagged suspicious activity linked to an Australian user uploading vile content online. This triggered a probe by the Northern Territory Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (NT JACET), a joint task force made up of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Northern Territory Police.
On October 13, 2023, cops raided the man’s Karama home and seized multiple electronic devices, including:
- Hard drive
- SD card
- Two mobile phones
All devices allegedly contained numerous graphic child abuse images and videos.
Man Faces Up to 15 Years Behind Bars
The 52-year-old was arrested and charged under section 474.22A of the Criminal Code Act 1995. This law covers possession of child abuse material accessed via a carriage service. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
AFP Vows to Hunt Down Predators
“Possessing, accessing, and transmitting child abuse material perpetuates the abuse of innocent children,” said AFP Superintendent Greg Davis.
He added: “These children are real individuals and should never be treated as commodities for the gratification of predators. We remain committed to protecting children and bringing offenders to justice.”
