London Predator Steven Burt Jailed for 32 Years Over Two Decades of Abuse

A southeast London man has been locked up for over three decades after a horrific 20-year spree of sexual offences. Steven Burt, 61, from Plumstead, Greenwich, was sentenced to 32 years and six months at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday, 20 April.

Long List of Charges and Heavy Compensation

Burt was found guilty of 33 offences involving six victims—two males and four females—all known to him. The charges include:

  • 14 counts of indecent assault on a male child
  • 2 counts of buggery of a male
  • 4 counts of buggery of a female
  • 8 counts of indecent assault on a female
  • 2 counts of indecency with a child
  • 2 counts of sexual intercourse with a child
  • 1 count of actual bodily harm

On top of his lengthy sentence, Burt was ordered to pay £15,000 to four victims and £1,000 each to two others. The judge praised retired police officer Nikki Honey and PC Gemma Major for their exceptional work on the case.

Victims’ Courage and Police Praise

“The victims have lived with these experiences since they were children and these memories have haunted them for their entire lives,” said Detective Constable Gemma Major from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences (CASO) Command.

“This has left them with serious mental and physical health issues, affecting relationships and daily life. Burt is a prolific offender who abused young children over a long period.”

“I’m grateful the victims came forward, enabling us to bring him to justice. I commend their bravery and hope this punishment helps them move on.”

Detectives warn there may be more victims yet to speak out and urge anyone abused by Burt to contact police. Burt’s abuse stretched back to 1980, with the earliest victim coming forward in 2014. He was arrested in November 2014 and charged in June 2017.

A Victim’s Powerful Statement

“When I was abused, it changed my life. I was terrified for years of what the abuser might do, scared people would blame me,” said one female victim.

“I was ashamed and believed his lies that no one would believe me. Carrying this dark secret was exhausting.

“But I’m not to blame. I am strong and brave—a survivor. Talking to police was the hardest but most freeing thing I’ve done. I’m no longer living in fear. I’m finally free.”

“Secrecy is the abuser’s weapon. Speaking out takes that away. If you’ve suffered, please seek help and speak up. Enough is enough.”
