Six jailed for over 60 years after massive drug ring busted in Coventry by West Midlands ROCU.

Coventry’s Cocaine Cartel Crushed

A major drug trafficking gang has been smashed, with six men locked up for a combined 60-plus years. The West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) uncovered a slick operation, led by Jonathan Mann, that moved more than 100 kilogrammes of Class A drugs—mainly cocaine—from Coventry to Crewe, Bristol, and beyond between April and November 2022.

Sentencing at Birmingham Crown Court marked a major victory for Operation Target, West Midlands Police’s crackdown on organised and violent crime.

Lavish Lifestyle Brought Them Down

Police revealed the gang carried out 163 drug runs in just 280 days, often returning to Coventry loaded with cash or drugs. Their downfall came when cops spotted their lavish lifestyles – luxury cars and designer goods that didn’t add up with their declared incomes.

Seized from the gang:

  • 21kg cocaine
  • 4.9kg ketamine
  • 17g MDMA
  • Over £450,000 in cash
  • A converted handgun found at Luke Purcell’s home

The Players and Their Prison Terms

Each man had a key role in the drug network’s operation:

  • Jonathan Mann (31): Ringleader. Jailed for 13 years, 4 months.
  • Thomas Johnson (35): Bought 5kg cocaine for another supply chain. Got 16 years.
  • Luke Purcell (30): Courier and firearm charge. Jailed 13 years, 2 months.
  • Alexander Purcell (32): Courier. Sentenced to 9 years.
  • Ryan Prescott (29): Main courier. Locked up for 8 years.
  • Ian Lewis (28): Money launderer and luxury buyer. Jailed for 3 years.

Encrypted Chats Exposed the Gang

The gang used coded nicknames like “Cookies” (Prescott) and “Greyman” (Mann). But intercepted encrypted messages detailing payments, supply orders, and trafficking routes sealed their fate and provided crucial trial evidence.

Operation Target Continues to Tackle Organised Crime

Since its launch, Operation Target has seized millions in drugs and cash, targeting County Lines gangs statewide.

“Disrupting the flow of high-volume Class A drugs is vital to tackling drug-related violence and safeguarding communities. This outcome sends a clear message,” said a National Crime Agency spokesperson.
