Man Charged Over Threatening Behaviour Amid Isla Bryson Prison Row
A 24-year-old man has been charged following alleged threatening and abusive behaviour linked to claims by Isla Bryson, the transgender double rapist who says she faced “abuse” while behind bars.
Controversy Over Bryson’s Prison Placement
Isla Bryson, formerly Adam Graham, was jailed for eight years in February for raping two women in 2016 and 2019. Currently held at HMP edinburgh/" title="Edinburgh" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Edinburgh, Bryson wrote to the Sunday Mail claiming mistreatment by both staff and inmates due to being transgender.
Her case sparked outrage when it emerged she was initially placed in an all-female prison. Then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon stepped in, ensuring Bryson was moved from Cornton Vale women’s prison to a male facility. Sturgeon made clear that transgender prisoner placements undergo strict risk assessments, prioritising the safety of other inmates.
Police Respond to Alleged Hate Crime
Police Scotland revealed they received a hate crime report at HMP Edinburgh on June 8, 2023. The man charged is now awaiting a report to the Procurator Fiscal, following investigations into his threatening behaviour toward Bryson.
Scottish Government Tightens Rules on Transgender Prisoners
The case prompted the Scottish Prison Service to review policies on managing transgender inmates as part of a wider gender identity reassessment. Until this review concludes, the government has confirmed that transgender prisoners with histories of violence against women won’t be moved to female prisons. New transgender inmates will be placed based on their sex assigned at birth, maintaining strict controls to protect vulnerable prisoners.
