Man Pleads Guilty to Murder After Victim Dies 13 Years Later

Trevor Baker has admitted to murdering his former partner Carolyn Kemp after she died from injuries he inflicted more than a decade ago.

Baker, 53, was already serving a 16-year sentence for attempted murder when Carolyn tragically passed away. He appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday, 22 March, and pleaded guilty to murder.

Brutal Attack Left Woman a Quadriplegic

The horror began on 25 November 2009 at Baker’s home in Romford. Carolyn Kemp, then 34, had left Baker six months earlier as their relationship fell apart. Enraged and unable to accept the split, Baker launched a savage attack.

Carolyn was left a quadriplegic with severe brain injuries. Baker subsequently pleaded guilty to attempted murder and received a 16-year jail term.

Death Linked to 2009 Attack

Carolyn died on 27 September 2022 from aspiration pneumonia. A post-mortem at Queens Hospital, Romford, revealed that her brain injuries from Baker’s assault caused her death. Specialists confirmed she would have survived if not for the trauma.

On 5 December 2023, Baker was charged with murder. He faces sentencing at the Old Bailey on 16 May.

Police Praise Guilty Plea, Urge Community Vigilance

Detective Chief Inspector Kelly Allen of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “Carolyn suffered extreme violence at the hands of Trevor Baker – violence that ultimately resulted in her death following more than a decade of suffering. It is right he be held accountable for the devastation his actions caused, not only to Carolyn but to her family and friends who loved her.

I am pleased that due to the guilty plea, Carolyn’s loved ones will now be spared the further distress of going through a trial and reliving the details of what was a horrific attack. My thoughts are with them.”

The Met Police are ramping up efforts to protect women and girls in London from stalking and domestic abuse. They’re using cutting-edge video technology and phone data analysis to catch offenders early.
