Relentless Harasser Convicted of Attempted Murder After Horrific Arson Attack

A man who tormented his ex-partner on social media before launching a terrifying attack has been found guilty of attempted murder and other serious crimes.

Arson Horror in Battersea Leaves Pregnant Deaf Woman and Daughter Injured

Harry Owusu-Manu, 39, from Southwark, was convicted at the Old Bailey on 23 February of two counts of attempted murder, aggravated arson with intent to endanger life, religiously aggravated stalking, and possessing a lock knife in public. His sentencing is set for 22 April.

On 25 April 2023, Owusu-Manu set fire to his ex-partner’s flat in Battersea. The victim, who is deaf and pregnant at the time, was inside along with her young daughter. Both suffered smoke inhalation but thankfully survived the blazing attack.

Social Media Abuse and Hate-Fuelled Harassment

Detective Constable Megan Gittins, leading the investigation, condemned Owusu-Manu’s behaviour as causing immense physical and mental harm. She revealed he refused to accept the relationship’s end, escalating from aggressive social media harassment — including Islamophobic abuse — to a deadly attack.

Met Police and Fire Brigade Crack Case with Van Dashcam Evidence

Owusu-Manu ignited a doormat, shoving it under the victim’s door to start the fire. He tried to cover his tracks by spray-painting CCTV cameras but was undone by dashcam footage from his bright orange van. The evidence showed his arrival minutes before the blaze and his attempts to dispose of incriminating items.

Arrested the same day, Owusu-Manu refused to cooperate, but the case against him was overwhelming.

Police Urge Victims to Speak Out

This chilling case highlights the dangers posed by violent ex-partners and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Metropolitan Police. Officers urge anyone facing harassment or abuse to come forward for support.

Owusu-Manu now faces sentencing, with the message clear: domestic violence will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable.
