Knife-Wielding Aggressor Sent Down After High Street Showdown
Andrew Maloney, 55, sparked fear on a bustling High Street on the evening of Friday 28 April 2023. Tempers flared when he turned aggressive towards a stranger who had stepped into a heated chat between Maloney and a third man.
Tense Stand-Off Turns Violent
The unknown man tried to calm the situation, but Maloney lost it and brandished a knife, causing chaos. Bystanders rushed to diffuse the drama, managing to move the weapon to a safe spot.
But Maloney wasn’t done. He climbed over a counter to snatch the knife back before storming off.
Swift Police Action Leads to Conviction
Police launched an investigation that quickly led to Maloney’s arrest. He later pleaded guilty to affray and threatening with an offensive weapon.
At Canterbury Crown Court on 19 June, the former The Derings, Lydd resident was handed a hefty two-year and three-month jail sentence. On top of that, he’s slapped with a ten-year restraining order.
Police Take a Hard Line on Knife Crime
Detective Inspector Stephanie Devon said: “People in Kent have the right to feel safe when socialising and offenders such as Maloney need to know that violent and aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated.
“I hope the prison term that Maloney has received serves as a reminder that we take knife crime very seriously. We will always strive to bring criminals who would use knives to inflict harm, or fear of harm, to justice.”
