Man Jailed for Ramming Cop After High-Speed Chase in North London
A reckless 19-year-old has been locked up for five and a half years after smashing a stolen car into a police officer during a nail-biting chase in Camden.
Chase Ends in Violence
David Doyle, from Brick Lane, Northolt, appeared at Harrow Crown Court on November 14. Along with his prison sentence, Doyle has been banned from driving for a whopping 81 months.
The drama unfolded on May 17 at around 6:20pm. PC Richard Keel was on patrol in Camden Street when he spotted Doyle tearing around in a stolen vehicle at dangerous speeds. When PC Keel gave chase, Doyle shockingly reversed at speed, hitting the officer three times – the final impact knocked PC Keel clean off his motorbike.
Public and Police Team Up
After the violent crash, Doyle fled the scene, leaving the badly injured officer behind. Heroic bystanders rushed to help PC Keel and called the London Ambulance Service. A swift investigation swung into action.
The stolen car was found about a mile away. CCTV footage and forensic evidence quickly pointed the finger at Doyle. He was arrested six days later on May 23 and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, among other driving offences.
Justice Served
Doyle pleaded guilty on August 1 and finally faced his punishment in November.
The Met Police commended the quick-thinking public who aided PC Keel and praised the meticulous police work that led to Doyle’s arrest and conviction.
