Man Found Guilty of Killing 87-Year-Old in Shocking Manor House Robbery
Tragic Assault on Pensioner John Mackey
John Mackey, 87, was brutally attacked on Goodchild Road at around 5:53pm on Tuesday, 6 May. The thug robbed him of his shopping before leaving him badly injured. John died in hospital two days later on 8 May.
Peter Augustine Convicted at Old Bailey
Today, 58-year-old Peter Augustine from Green Lanes, Hornsey, was found guilty of John’s murder at the Old Bailey.
“I hope that Augustine’s conviction is a small reprieve for the family of John,” said Acting Detective Chief Inspector John Marriott, who led the investigation. “It is a shameful tragedy that John was killed by Augustine for a mere few bits of shopping. He deserved better.”
CCTV Footage Cracks Case Wide Open
- Police arrested Augustine just two days after the attack, after CCTV showed him stalking John following a shop visit.
- The footage captured Augustine buying dinner at a kebab shop before launching the savage attack and stealing John’s bag containing a newspaper, cornflakes, cottage pie, and a meal of sausage and chips.
- Augustine was caught at a nearby hotel. In custody, he showed zero remorse, hurling threats and throwing hot coffee at an officer.
- He denied involvement during interviews, saying, “I ain’t killed nobody, mate,” but detectives saw through his lies and charged him with murder and robbery on 9 May.
After a two-week trial that began on 3 November, Augustine was found guilty on all charges. Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, 28 November at the Old Bailey.
