Man Jailed for Life Over Brutal Murder of Sir Richard Sutton and Attack on His Mother

Thomas Schreiber, 35, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 36 years for the ruthless murder of Sir Richard Sutton and the attempted murder of his own mother at their North Dorset home. The grim verdict came after a trial at Winchester Crown Court on 20 December 2021, where Schreiber was found guilty of both murder and attempted murder.

Horrific Stabbing at Family Home

On the evening of 7 April 2021, Dorset Police were called to Higher Langham near Gillingham after concerns were raised for Sir Richard, 83, and his partner Anne Schreiber, 65. Officers discovered both had been viciously stabbed inside the property.

Tragically, Sir Richard was pronounced dead at the scene around 9.15pm. Anne was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries and remains with severe and lasting damage.

Shocking Betrayal by Son

Thomas Schreiber, who lived at the property with Sir Richard and Anne, had sparked alarm by messaging acquaintances with disturbing remarks on the night of the attack.

Working with Wiltshire Police, Hampshire Constabulary, Thames Valley Police, and the Met, officers arrested Schreiber around 10.30pm in Hammersmith, London.

Heroes at the Scene and Court Praise

The sentencing judge, Honourable Mr Justice Graham, praised the quick-thinking firearms officer who gave Anne first aid, as well as the diligent police teams and family liaison officers involved.

Dorset Police Detective Inspector Simon Huxter said:

“Our thoughts remain first and foremost with the family of Sir Richard and Anne. I want to thank them for their support and dignity throughout the investigation and trial. Thanks also to all officers and staff from Dorset Police and other forces, and the CPS prosecution team for securing this conviction and sentence.”
