Met Police Officer Fired Over Sexual Harassment Claims

A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been sacked without warning after a misconduct panel found he sexually harassed several colleagues over three years.

Detective Sergeant Gethin Jones, part of the West Area’s Public Protection Team, was dismissed following a disciplinary hearing that ended on March 19.

Six Colleagues Speak Out

The panel heard from six colleagues, mostly junior officers, who reported unwanted sexual behaviour, misogynistic comments, and inappropriate messages both at work and off duty. The incidents stretched from July 2019 to September 2022.

The misconduct breached key professional standards, including:

  • Authority, respect, and courtesy
  • Equality and diversity
  • Discreditable conduct

Senior Officer Slams Behaviour

Chief Superintendent Jill Horsfall, head of policing for the West Area, condemned Jones’ actions:

“DS Jones’ behaviour was completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the Met. He made his colleagues, mostly junior ranks, feel extremely uncomfortable. It’s right he’s been dismissed immediately.”

She praised the victims for their courage:

“Work should be a safe place with colleagues you can trust. I want to commend those who came forward and urge anyone going through similar to speak up.”

Booted and Banned From Policing

Following his dismissal, DS Jones will be placed on the College of Policing’s barred list. This means he’s banned from any policing or law enforcement role across the UK – including with police forces, policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS).

The Metropolitan Police reaffirmed their commitment to stamping out misconduct and improving workplace culture.
