Met Police Officer Denies Causing Widow’s Death in Duchess Escort Crash
Fatal Collision Shocks London
A Metropolitan Police officer has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of 81-year-old Helen Holland by careless driving. Christopher Harrison, 67, appeared at the Old Bailey today (December 4) over a crash linked to a royal motorcade escort.
The tragedy unfolded on May 10, 2023, at the busy junction of West Cromwell Road and Warwick Road, Earl’s Court, London. Ms Holland was hit by a police motorcycle escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh. She suffered critical injuries and died two weeks later.
Royal Condolences After Tragedy
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson shared heartfelt sympathy: “The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to hear that Helen Holland has passed away. Her Royal Highness’s deepest condolences and sympathies go to all of Ms Holland’s family.”
Trial Set for November 2025
Harrison, who merely confirmed his identity during the brief hearing, was granted unconditional bail. The former officer is due to stand trial nearly two years after the incident, on November 10, 2025.
Family Demands Justice as Attention Mounts
The case has sparked widespread interest, given the involvement of a high-profile royal escort. Ms Holland’s family continues to call for justice and calls for tighter scrutiny of police safety procedures during high-security events.
This chilling case highlights the vital need for road safety – even when protecting the nation’s VIPs.
