Millwall Fans Spark Fury with “Let Him Die” Chant After Horror Mateta Head Injury
Millwall fans have drawn outrage for shouting the vile chant “let him die” at Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The French forward was stretchered off after a brutal head challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts during their FA Cup fifth-round clash at Selhurst Park.
Reckless Goalkeeper Tackle Leaves Mateta Hospitalised
Just eight minutes into the game, Roberts wildly attempted to clear a through ball but crushed Mateta’s head with his studs. The 27-year-old collapsed instantly and was given oxygen on the pitch as the match paused for nine tense minutes. Medics eventually stretchered Mateta off and rushed him to hospital.
VAR Red Card Sends Millwall Down to Ten Men
Referee Michael Oliver initially waved away the foul, sparking protests. But after a VAR review, Roberts was slapped with a straight red card, condemning Millwall to play nearly the whole match with ten men.
BBC commentator and former England defender Matt Upson called the incident “deeply concerning.” Ex-Brighton striker Glenn Murray blasted: “Roberts catches Mateta’s temple with his studs. It’s a shocking challenge.”
Crystal Palace Chairman Condemns “Most Reckless Challenge Ever”
Palace chairman Steve Parish slammed the tackle as “the most reckless challenge on a football pitch I think I’ve ever seen.” Speaking at halftime, he said:
“So far, we know he’s got a bad gash behind his ear and a head injury. He’s at the hospital, and we hope for the best.”
“That lad (Roberts) needs to have a long, hard look at himself because he’s endangering a fellow professional—maybe even his life.”
Disgraceful Millwall Fans’ Chant Sparks Backlash
The worst moment came as Mateta was stretchered off, with Millwall’s away supporters echoing their disgusting “let him die” chant. Crystal Palace fans responded with a heartfelt standing ovation, chanting the striker’s name in support.
Calls Grow for Tougher Punishments and Fan Sanctions
Parish also questioned the need for VAR on an obvious foul:
“They’ve got a duty of care, and that goalkeeper hasn’t shown one. If you’re kicking someone in the head with full force, God knows what damage has been done to him.”
Millwall FC are yet to comment on the fan behaviour. Meanwhile, calls intensify for stronger punishments on dangerous tackles and abuse by supporters as Mateta remains under medical observation.
Crystal Palace fans hope for quick and positive news on their striker’s recovery in the coming days.
