Murder Probe Launched 15 Years After Acton Garden Shears Attack

Police have reopened a shocking case from 2003 after a father-of-two, Rajesh Verma, died following a brutal assault near Acton Park. The gang attack left Rajesh, then 42, with severe brain damage after he was stabbed in the head with garden shears.

Attack Left Rajesh Brain-Damaged and Helpless for Years

On 31 August 2003, Rajesh was attacked by up to eight men near the entrance to Acton Park, opposite Birkbeck Grove, W3. Despite a police inquiry at the time, no arrests were made. The garden shears used in the assault were found close by.

Rajesh survived but suffered lasting brain injuries, epilepsy, and deteriorating health. After a 2015 heart attack worsened his condition, he was unresponsive and unable to move or speak for the final 18 months before his death on 27 May 2018.

Murder Investigation Reopened – £20,000 Reward Offered

A post-mortem confirmed Rajesh’s death was linked to the 2003 attack, leading to an inquest ruling of unlawful killing. Now, the Met’s Specialist Crime Command has classified the case as murder and relaunched investigations.

Detective Chief Inspector Noel McHugh said: “The attack involved ferocious violence by a group of men, one stabbing Rajesh in the head with garden shears. We believe he was attacked after intervening in a dispute.”

The suspects are thought to be local East African men still living or connected to the Acton area.

A £20,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Rajesh’s killers. Anyone with details is urged to call 020 8785 8099 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Family Pleads for Justice After Years of Pain

Rajesh’s wife, Roma Verma, described the lasting impact on their family:

“Our children were just 11 and 13 when their lives were turned upside down. We cared for him at home, watching him unable to think, move, talk, or walk. It was all about him, but we held onto hope.”

Roma added:

“The assault was random and cruel. Rajesh’s generosity and protective nature made him a much-loved figure in Acton. Hundreds attended his funeral, including friends, family, homeless people, and local business owners he tirelessly helped.”

Police are desperate for answers to bring justice for Rajesh and his devastated family after 17 long years.
