Speeding Driver Mows Down Essex Police Officer with Child Onboard
A terrifying drama unfolded in Grays, Essex, when a driver stopped for speeding ran over a police officer — while her child sat in the back seat.
Unlicensed Nurse Flees After Striking PC Green
Abiola Akilla, driving without a licence or insurance, was pulled over by PC Caroline Green during a routine stop on Stanford Road, Grays.
PC Green approached to check the car’s registration after the speeding alert. But Akilla suddenly slammed her foot on the reverse and hit the officer, dragging her down the road.
“Her front wheel went over my ankle, then she drove up my leg. I was in so much pain I thought she’d snapped my leg,” PC Green revealed.
Serious Injuries and a Long Recovery
- Two broken ribs and three fractured ribs
- Deep abrasions and swelling to her hand
- Head wound and ligament damage to ankle
- Months of concussion and PTSD
PC Green was airlifted to Royal London Hospital after a passerby called an ambulance when Akilla fled the scene with her child still in the car.
Justice Served: Jail and Driving Ban for Akilla
Akilla, a nurse, was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, later downgraded to serious injury by dangerous driving.
On 30 March 2022, she was jailed for 30 months and handed a six-year driving ban.
“Every day since that incident I’ve been on some form of recovery… it’s like a life sentence for me,” PC Green said, reflecting on the lasting trauma.
The Essex Police Federation stood firmly behind PC Green, supporting her medical care and counselling through the ordeal.
PC Green’s grit and dedication underline the extreme risks frontline officers face to keep the public safe.
