Sussex Police Clear Officer Over Controversial Bus Arrest
Sussex Police have ruled that the officer’s actions during a bus arrest were “reasonable and proportionate.” No misconduct proceedings will be taken. The decision follows a detailed review of the incident that sparked outrage on social media.
Man Charged After Abusive Bus Outburst
Officers were called after a man on a bus was reportedly “abusive to other passengers and refusing to leave.” The man was arrested on Monday, July 18, charged with assaulting an emergency worker and using threatening or abusive behaviour.
He was released on conditional court bail and is due back in court on August 15.
Full Review Shows Officer Acted Appropriately
Video clips of part of the arrest went viral online, raising public concern. Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department reviewed the bodycam footage, CCTV, witness statements, and a mandatory use-of-force report.
A spokesperson said: “We strive to learn from every interaction and have involved our Independent Advisory Group to better understand public perception of use of force.”
East Sussex Chief Defends Officers’ Training and Conduct
East Sussex Division Superintendent Till Sanderson acknowledged the public’s worries but warned against judging the incident from limited footage.
“Social media videos rarely show the full picture of events leading to an arrest. Officers are highly trained and only use force when it is reasonable and necessary,” Sanderson said. “All actions are closely scrutinised and accountability is ensured.”
Despite concerns, Sussex Police stand by their officers, insisting proper procedures were followed. The case continues as the man prepares for his court appearance in August.
