Fake Cop Scams 84-Year-Old Out of Thousands
A ruthless fraudster posing as a police officer targeted an 84-year-old woman on Saturday, 19 February. The scammer claimed her bank account had been flagged for fraud and demanded she withdraw nearly £18,000 to “forensically analyse” the cash.
Courier Collection and Rolex Rip-Off
The victim was told to wrap the money in newspaper and await collection by a courier who would ask for a secret password. But the scam didn’t stop there. She was later pressured into buying a Rolex worth around £40,000 and two gold bullion bars from a dodgy website.
Thankfully, the gold bullion site blocked the first payment and flagged the scam when the second went through, alerting officers.
Police Warn: Never Withdraw Cash for the Police
“No police force would ever ask you to withdraw money from your account,” police warned. “If someone claiming to be a police officer tells you to do this, call 999 immediately.”
Teen Suspect Arrested, More Victims Sought
A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the scam. Police believe other victims may exist and urge anyone with similar experiences to come forward.
