Police Clamp Down on ‘Welcome Trump’ and ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ Protests
London braces for Saturday’s protest chaos as police impose strict conditions on the ‘Welcome Trump’ procession and the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ rally. The crackdown aims to stop serious disorder and keep the city moving.
What’s Happening on 14 July?
- The ‘Welcome Trump’ march starts at the US Embassy, heading to Whitehall to join the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ rally.
- A counter-protest opposing the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ event will also take place nearby.
- Both protests are expected to spark tension, following violent scenes last month when police were attacked during a ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ demonstration.
On 9 June, the ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ protest erupted into chaos with bottles and barriers thrown at officers. Five police suffered injuries and nine people were arrested. Officers are determined to prevent a repeat.
New Rules for Protesters
Under the Public Order Act, police have imposed tight restrictions:
‘Welcome Trump’ and ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ March:
- Must assemble at Temple Place between 1pm and 2pm on 14 July.
- Route is fixed: Temple Place → Embankment → Northumberland Avenue → Whitehall Place → Whitehall.
- No other marches related to these causes allowed.
- No motor vehicles permitted.
- Failure to follow conditions risks arrest and prosecution.
Counter-Protest Opposing ‘Free Tommy Robinson’ Rally:
- Assembly at Parliament Street, south of the police barrier.
- Gathering must start after midday and end by 6.30pm.
- Same strict adherence to police rules applies, with arrests expected for breaches.
- These rules exclude the ‘Stand Up to Racism’ march in Old Palace Yard (1pm-2pm).
Police Ready to Pounce
Chief Superintendent Elaine Van-Orden issued a stark warning:
“We police hundreds of demonstrations every year and always support peaceful protest. But for 14 July, we have serious concerns. Conditions have been imposed to protect Londoners and prevent disruption.”
“If you protest peacefully, we want to work with you. Break the rules or commit crimes and you will face arrest.”
Police will deploy dedicated, flexible teams and Liaison Officers across key spots, ready to nip trouble in the bud and keep the city running smoothly.
Stay Informed or Face the Consequences
Police advise anyone attending to consult officers on site as conditions may change. Londoners are urged to expect heavy policing all day on 14 July.
