Brighton Police Break Up 150-Strong Vigil in Valley Gardens
Police were called to Valley Gardens, Brighton, shortly after 6pm on Saturday (March 13) after around 150 people gathered in breach of coronavirus rules. Officers arrived on the scene and urged the crowd to disperse, explaining the government’s Covid-19 restrictions.
Where warnings failed, police took “necessary and proportionate” enforcement action, in line with their pandemic policing strategy.
Arrests and Fines as Officers Crack Down
A 20-year-old man was arrested for failing to comply with police directions intended to control the spread of coronavirus. He has been taken into custody.
In addition, eight Fixed Penalty Notices were handed out to attendees for breaking Covid regulations.
Police Understand Why People Gathered—But Rules Still Apply
Sussex Police acknowledged the crowd’s desire to mourn Sarah Everard’s death in London and to raise awareness about women’s safety. They said they “absolutely understand the importance of this message” and know many women feel unsafe walking the streets.
“We acknowledge many women have experienced violence, abuse or harassment, and this is not acceptable. Protecting our communities is a top priority for Sussex Police,” officials said.
Coronavirus Rules Remain in Force Despite Court Ruling
Despite the public’s understandable grief, the UK remains in a health emergency. Current Covid laws still ban large gatherings due to ongoing virus risks.
A High Court judgement on March 12 confirmed that planned vigils do not exempt attendees from government restrictions during the national lockdown.
Police thanked those who have shown respect for the rules by finding safe, alternative ways to express their feelings during this emotional time.
