Fleeing Attacker Nabbed Two Months Later
McLean, 39, of no fixed address, fled the scene after a savage assault on February 27 in Rishi News, South Street. CCTV caught him chasing his 29-year-old victim into a shop around midday before launching a vicious attack with a pair of scissors.
The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. McLean vanished, sparking a major manhunt that stretched over two months.
Hunted Across Cities, Arrest Made in Liverpool
Sussex Police teamed up with Merseyside Police and CrimeStoppers, which offered a £3,000 reward for info. Finally, on April 29, McLean was arrested in Liverpool and charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.
Guilty Plea Ahead of Sentencing
McLean admitted both charges at Lewes Crown Court on May 26. His sentencing is set for Friday, July 15, at a court to be confirmed.
“This was a brazen, violent attack carried out in the middle of the day with complete disregard for the general public,” said Detective Inspector Neil Phillips. “McLean left his victim with horrific injuries and fled hundreds of miles to avoid justice. Thanks to the tenacity of our officers and partners, we brought him to custody where overwhelming evidence forced a guilty plea.”
