Serial Romance Fraudster Jailed for 11 Years
David Checkley, 65, has finally been locked up for 11 years after ripping off at least ten women across the UK out of around £100,000. The Metropolitan Police detectives brought the shameless conman to justice in a stunning victory against romance fraud.
The Conviction
Posing as “David Cohen,” Checkley was found guilty at the Old Bailey on 29 November of 19 counts of fraud and one count of theft. The eight-week trial featured shocking testimony from his ten female victims who described how he ripped them off.
Checkley’s Lies Exposed
The fraudster spun a tangled web of lies, claiming to be everything from a fighter pilot and WW1 veteran to a top architect with a billionaire ex-wife. All part of his twisted plan to swindle vulnerable women aged 40 to 70 into handing over their cash.
Investigation Uncovers Lavish Spoils
Detective Superintendent John Roch and the Met’s Economic Crime Team launched the inquiry in June 2021. They uncovered invoices for pricey jewellery, flashy property brochures, and receipts for luxury buys — including a £7,250 Rolex and two new Harley Davidson motorbikes. Multiple luxury cars linked to Checkley were also seized.
Victims’ Courage Praised
“We admire the bravery of the women who came forward,” said Detective Roch. “Romance fraud inflicts both emotional and financial damage. Their testimony was vital to achieving justice.”
Police Warn the Public
After this high-profile bust, the Met urges everyone to stay alert against romance scams. They recommend following the “Take Five to Stop Fraud” campaign and reporting suspicious activity to your bank and Action Fraud.
Justice Served
Checkley’s hefty sentence sends a clear warning: exploiting love and trust for profit will not be tolerated. The Metropolitan Police vow to keep fighting to protect victims and bring fraudsters to book.
