Four Police Attacks Daily in Kent Since 2020

Kent police officers are under relentless attack, with an average of four assaults every single day since April 2020. Officers face kicks, punches, bites, and even being spat at while trying to arrest offenders and protect vulnerable people.

Racist Abuse on the Rise

Alongside physical attacks, racist abuse is also hitting Kent’s police force hard. There have been 66 reported incidents of racist abuse against both officers and police staff over the same period. Chief Constable Alan Pughsley condemned these vile acts, calling them “absolutely unacceptable.”

“Whilst policing is a dangerous profession, being assaulted must never be seen as just part of the job,” said Chief Constable Pughsley. “It is abhorrent that so many are being attacked throughout the course of their duties.”

“Some criminals think nothing of lashing out at the brave men and women who are there to help their communities.”

“There is no place in society for offences motivated by prejudice.”

Shocking Assault Figures Over Two Years

  • 2020/21: 1,610 assaults on Kent police officers, 37 racist abuse cases
  • 2021/22 (to 16 March): 1,615 assaults, 29 racist abuse cases

Calls to Toughen Sentences for Attacking Emergency Workers

Parliament is debating a proposal to double the maximum prison sentence for assaulting emergency workers from 12 months to two years. Chief Constable Pughsley backs the move outright.

“Criminals who attack police officers are an absolute disgrace,” he said. “Police run towards danger while others flee. They don’t deserve to be physically attacked.”

“Many officers suffer cuts, bruises, broken bones, and emotional trauma. Being spat at or bitten carries the added horror of potential infection.”

“We provide them with protective gear like spit guards and tasers and ensure they get full welfare support to recover.”

“Those who attack or racially abuse officers will be arrested, charged, and brought to justice.”
