Sheffield Man Jailed for Sexually Abusing Teenage Girl
A 63-year-old predator, Stephen Smith, has been locked up for 14 years after grooming and raping a vulnerable teenage girl. The sickening abuse lasted two years before the attack in June 2021.
Disturbing Grooming and Abuse Revealed
Detective Constable Stuart Gibbons exposed Smith’s vile methods. He plied the young victim with alcohol and made lewd advances. The trauma was so severe the girl tried to take her own life by overdosing on tablets.
“Smith preyed on a vulnerable teenager and subjected her to a disgusting ordeal just to satisfy his perversions,” said DC Gibbons.
After the rape, the victim bravely confided in a relative, who reported Smith to the police. Officers arrested Smith, who was heavily drunk and showed no remorse during questioning.
Guilty Verdict After Tough Trial
Smith, from the Foxhill area of Sheffield, initially pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges but denied rape. However, after a four-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court, the jury found him guilty of rape.
Last Friday (21 October), Smith was sentenced to 14 years behind bars. He must serve at least nine years before parole eligibility.
Lifetime Punishment and Victim’s Courage
Smith will remain on the sex offender register for life and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning contact with anyone under 16.
DC Gibbons praised the victim’s bravery: “I wish to applaud the victim for the courage she has shown coming forward and throughout this process. I hope she can find some closure knowing justice has been served.”
