Sir David Amess Killer Admits “I Killed an MP” in Chilling Police Interview
Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, was brutally stabbed over 20 times during a constituency surgery in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, on October 15. The horrific attack shocked the nation.
Suspect Denies Murder But Confesses to Police
Ali Harbi Ali, 26, stands accused of murder and preparing terrorist acts but denies the charges. Yet, in a bombshell moment at the Old Bailey, he told officers, “I killed an MP.
In an interview recorded just five-and-a-half hours after the stabbing, PC Jody Grogan asked Ali if the attack was terrorism. Ali replied, “I mean, I guess yeah I killed an MP and I done it yeah.” He also admitted he acted alone: “I was by myself completely.”
How Ali Planned the Attack
Ali revealed chilling details of why and how he picked Sir David:
- He considered MPs involved in the Syria airstrikes as “just targets.”
- He searched Twitter for “MP’s surgeries” and found Sir David’s contact.
- He called Amess “the easiest” target to carry out the attack on.
Ali said he had “bottled” previous attempts to attack and admitted he had previously planned assaults but backed out. He confessed, “I felt like if I didn’t do it yesterday I probably wouldn’t.”
Other MPs on Suspect’s Radar
Ali initially targeted cabinet minister Michael Gove but abandoned the plan when he found out about Gove’s recent split from his wife. He also visited London MP Mike Freer’s surgery in Finchley.
Reflecting on the attack, Ali said, “It’s hard. You see a man alive, and then he’s dead.” But moments later confessed, “Obviously I killed someone yesterday, there’s no doubt about that, but it still doesn’t really feel like it.”
Family Ties and Final Moments
When arrested, Ali was reportedly on the phone to his sister, who was crying. He claimed that was the only reason he dropped his knife in front of officers. He admitted he felt allegiance to so-called Islamic State and wanted to be seen as an “Islamic State militant.”
The trial at the Old Bailey is ongoing.
