Seven e-scooters have already been smashed by police in a crackdown on illegal riding in town centres and public areas.
E-Scooter Use Still Illegal on Public Roads
Riding e-scooters on public streets, pavements, or cycle lanes remains illegal across the UK. They can only be used on private land with the owner’s permission or in government-approved trial areas.
Police Seize Eight E-Scooters Since December
Since 10 December 2023, police patrols in 123 have been actively spotting and confiscating unlawful e-scooters, seizing eight in total.
Chief Inspector Warns of Dangers
maidstone/" title="Maidstone" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Maidstone Chief Inspector Mark McLellan said: “The dangerous, illegal, and inappropriate use of e-scooters can pose serious risks to the safety of older and vulnerable pedestrians. They also endanger other road users, including cyclists and motorists.”
Ongoing Police Campaign and Tough Penalties
Last year, officers ran a month-long campaign to educate the public on e-scooter laws. McLellan added: “We continue to stop riders to provide advice and issue warnings. Anyone ignoring previous warnings risks fines, and their e-scooters being seized and destroyed.”
