Three Men Jailed Over Brutal Machete Attack in South Ockendon
Three thugs have been locked up for a combined 57 years after a savage attack involving a car chase, a hit-and-run, and a machete assault in South Ockendon.
Chased, Hit by Car, and Attacked with Machetes
The victim, a man in his 20s, was driving near Arisdale Close at around 12:35am on 1 July 2020 when a grey BMW X5 started following him. The chase escalated when the victim abandoned his car and tried to flee on foot – only to be hunted down and brutally attacked with machetes by two men from the BMW.
The attackers then sped off, leaving the victim seriously injured. He was treated at the scene before being rushed to hospital with life-changing wounds.
High-Speed Police Pursuit Ends in Dramatic Arrests
A witness gave cops a partial registration for the BMW, which was spotted in Brentwood less than an hour later. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects fled, driving the wrong way at 80-85mph on the A127.
Police used tactical contact to force the car to a halt in Rosebury Gardens, Upminster. The driver, 22-year-old Bradley Dulieu, was arrested on the spot. Passenger Talliq Mwalim was caught after a short foot chase, while the third gang member, 23-year-old Jay Hursham, went on the run over yards and fences before trying to hide in a hot tub.
Armed officers, guided by a police helicopter, surrounded the hot tub and hauled a blood-covered Hursham out, arresting him on the spot.
Harsh Sentences After Basildon Crown Court Trial
Following a trial at Basildon Crown Court, Hursham and Mwalim were convicted of attempted murder, with Dulieu found guilty of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. On 28 March, Hursham was jailed for 24 years, Mwalim for 23 years, and Dulieu for 10 years.
Detective Superintendent Natalia Ross said:
“This was a brutal and prolonged attack where these three men subjected the victim to extreme violence. They had armed themselves and hunted him down with the clear intent to leave him with significant injuries. Such was the ferocity of this attack, he is lucky to be alive.
Then in an attempt to 1 justice, Hursham, Mwalim, and Dulieu put the safety of dozens of other people at risk by travelling at high speed the wrong way on a busy road. Their reckless actions show how little they value life.
It is testament to the work of the first responders and medical professionals that the victim has survived and to the responding officers whose tenacity, dedication, and professionalism meant this gang were unable to escape. Now, thanks to our thorough investigation they will be spending the foreseeable future behind bars. Today, Essex is a safer place.”
