Three Admit Guilt in Sunderland Riots
Three people caught up in the violent riots that shook Sunderland last Friday have now pleaded guilty to charges of violent disorder.
The Defendants and Their Charges
Leanne Hodgson, 43, is among those admitting guilt. Details on the other defendants remain sketchy, but a 27-year-old man has pleaded guilty to burglary linked to the chaos, while two others await further court proceedings.
Chaos on the Streets
During the rampage, Hodgson was filmed pushing a large bin down towards police officers. Prosecutor John Garside described a “large crowd” who cheered her on, turning the incident into a full-scale mob attack.
District Judge Zoe Passfield branded the event as “large-scale mob violence resulting in public fear and damage to local businesses.”
It was revealed Hodgson was “very drunk and angry” at the time, with a “long-running alcohol problem.”
Other Court Actions
A 27-year-old man with no fixed address admitted to stealing vapes from a shop that was trashed during the riots but denied violent disorder charges.
Two more suspects, aged 48 and 31, didn’t enter pleas and were remanded to Newcastle Crown Court for hearings on 2 September.
Police Launch Hard-Hitting Response
Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr of Northumbria Police’s major investigation team slammed the rioters. “All three individuals should be ashamed of their actions. We will continue to pursue every investigative avenue to bring justice against those involved. Further activity is planned,” Barr stated.
The message is clear: Sunderland’s rioters won’t escape justice.
