Jerry, 51, Brutally Attacked with Brick and Metal Bar on Way Home

Jerry Appicella, 51, was set upon by a gang of youths armed with a brick and a metal bar as he walked home from his local shop on 3 December. His body was found 12 days later at his home on Craganour Place after his family reported him missing.

Four Teens Face Justice After Shocking Sheffield Murder and Manslaughter

On 25 March, four young men appeared at Sheffield Crown Court over the savage attack. Shae Nicholson, 20, was found guilty of murder. Martell Fabian Brown, 24, and a 15-year-old boy were convicted of manslaughter. Kian Gerrard was cleared.

The court revealed the chilling motive: these youths attacked “because they wanted to.” Possible factors included Mr Appicella’s sexuality, appearance, and alcohol dependency.

Horrific Ambush Caught on CCTV

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Palmer said the group had been causing trouble at the Go Local store in Denaby Main before singling out Mr Appicella.

“They taunted and mocked him in the shop, then lay in wait to ambush him as he headed home down a dark alleyway. Nicholson crouched, ready with a brick, while others stalked him,” DCI Palmer explained.

“The brutal attack involved Nicholson smashing Mr Appicella with the brick and a 15-year-old swinging a metal pole. A woman, who had earlier offered to walk him home, witnessed the final moments and rushed to his side as the attackers fled.”

Mr Appicella was helped home and locked his door but died hours later from severe head trauma.

CCTV Evidence and Arrests Lead to Charges

Police launched a murder probe after family reported Mr Appicella missing. CCTV footage was key, capturing the attack and showing Nicholson bragging about it inside the shop, using homophobic slurs.

All four suspects were arrested between 18 and 24 December and charged. Sentencing for the convicted is set for May 2021.
