Brave Cops Stop Armed Man’s Mad Pub Rampage
PC Leanne Payne and PC Joseph Konieczny faced a terrifying showdown at a Surlingham pub on May 23, 2021. They were called after reports of a man in military gear brandishing what looked like a rifle.
Man Threatened to Be Shot Dead
The suspect wasn’t just playing dress-up. He arrived with an imitation gun, hoping to provoke police into shooting him. “I will come into the pub in a minute, I will be armed,” he warned staff.
When the officers arrived, they were met by a man holding what appeared to be a real weapon. The pair described the harrowing encounter as a “nightmare.”
Quick Thinking Saves the Day
As the man threatened the officers, he suddenly slipped—giving Payne and Konieczny the crucial moment they needed. They fired a non-lethal baton round, hitting him in the leg and swiftly arresting him.
The suspect was charged with multiple offences and sentenced to four years and four months in prison. The judge slammed his “clearly intended fatal action” and highlighted the severe risk of psychological harm to the pub’s patrons and the high risk of his own death.
Police Federation Praises Officers
“What incredible work from Leanne and Joseph,” said Sam Hawkins, Secretary of the Norfolk Police Federation. “They feared for their lives, convinced the weapon was real. But their calm professionalism and quick thinking disarmed and detained the suspect, protecting everyone.”
Hawkins added: “Leanne and Joseph exemplify the best of the police service – they deserve all the praise and recognition.”
National Police Bravery Awards
Payne and Konieczny have been nominated for the National Police Bravery Awards, which celebrate extraordinary courage across England and Wales. The awards ceremony will take place in London this July, with 77 nominees from 39 forces honoured.
