Guns Found in Sheffield Drug Raid Spark Prison Sentences
On 6 August 2019, police executed a misuse of drugs warrant at a property on Prince of Wales Road, Manor Castle, Sheffield. While searching for drugs, officers instead uncovered two firearms and a black bag filled with bullets.
No Drugs, But Guns Galore
The property was empty when police entered, but the weapons were seized and sent for forensic analysis. A week later, officers returned and arrested the occupant, 57-year-old John Murphy.
DNA Links Gun to Prisoner
Forensics revealed DNA on one handgun belonged to 24-year-old Mason Reside, who was already behind bars for unrelated crimes. Both Murphy and Reside were charged with possession of a firearm.
Five Years Each for Dangerous Weapons
At Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday 26 October, both men were sentenced to five years in prison.
Detective Sergeant Jim Dyson said: “Firearms have the potential to inflict serious injury on people, in addition to causing fear and violence for those living peacefully in our communities. We do not tolerate firearms, and I am pleased that Murphy and Reside have been punished for being in possession of these dangerous weapons. Any offences involving guns will be taken seriously by the force, and we will bring those responsible to justice.”
