NHS Faces Massive Doctor Strikes Over Bank Holiday Weekend

Up to half of NHS doctors are set to strike for four days from 7am Tuesday, 11 April, until 7am Saturday, 15 April. This industrial action hits right after a busy four-day bank holiday weekend, putting huge pressure on already stretched services.

Emergency Care Prioritised Amid Chaos

The NHS is battling record demand as staff work flat out to keep vital services running. Efforts focus on protecting emergency treatment, critical care, neonatal and maternity units, trauma, cancer surgery, and patients waiting longest for elective care.

Unfortunately, routine and planned care will take a serious hit. Appointments and procedures will only be rescheduled when absolutely necessary and hospitals will rebook as quickly as possible.

What Patients Need to Know

  • Use 111 online first for health advice.
  • Call 999 only for life-threatening emergencies.
  • Mental health crisis services remain available through normal channels.
  • Emergency departments are under strain—only attend if it’s a life-threatening injury or illness.
  • For less urgent issues, use urgent treatment centres and pharmacies across Kent and Medway.
  • Attend planned appointments unless contacted otherwise.

Official Warning from NHS Kent and Medway

“We are working closely with partners to ensure patients receive safe care during junior doctors’ industrial action,” said NHS Kent and Medway’s Chief Medical Officer Kate Langford.

“We expect significant disruption across hospitals, A&E, GP practices, and mental health services. But urgent cases must still come forward promptly, especially when lives are at risk.”

Stay alert, use NHS services wisely, and only seek emergency care when truly necessary. The next few days will be a tough test for the NHS.
