US Seizes Russian-Flagged Tanker in Daring Crackdown on ‘Illicit’ Venezuelan Oil
America Hunts Down ‘Illicit’ Venezuelan Oil Worldwide
In a bold move, the US has grabbed the Marinera oil tanker linked to Russia and Venezuela. The vessel was caught trying to dodge sanctions and sneak oil shipments across the globe.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth slammed the operations in a fiery post on X, saying:
“The blockade of sanctioned and illicit Venezuelan oil remains in FULL EFFECT — anywhere in the world.”
The US European Command backed him up with an official announcement confirming the crackdown.
Marinera Tanker Snared for Breaking Sanctions
The tanker, formerly known as Bella 1, was intercepted by the US after it switched flags from Guyana to Russia. The change was seen as a legal dodge to avoid seizure, but it didn’t work.
US forces tracked the Marinera sailing in the North Atlantic, forcing its capture under a federal court warrant.
“The @TheJusticeDept & @DHSgov, in coordination with the @DeptofWar, today announced the seizure of the M/V Bella 1,” the US European Command said. “The vessel was seized after being tracked by USCGC Munro.”
Secretive Military Moves Spark Speculation
At the same time, US Air Force special ops jets departed Scotland’s Wick Airport for Iceland, arriving alongside a British RAF transport. The mission remains top secret, raising eyebrows amid the tanker bust.
Russia Fumes Over Tanker Seizure, Calls It Illegal
Moscow slammed Washington’s seizure of the Marinera. The Russian Foreign Ministry said the tanker was sailing legally under a Russian flag in international waters.
They demanded respect for the ship’s navigation rights, but Washington pushed ahead, highlighting rising tensions over Venezuela-Russia oil shipments.
Flag Swap Was No Clever Trick
Military analyst Sean Bell breaks down the tanker’s flag switch: “Changing from Guyana to Russia was a calculated attempt for legal protection. A country’s flag grants a vessel rights under international law.”
But the move blew up in their faces. With the tanker now in US hands, the supposed legal shield has been shredded.
