Remembering PC Phillip Walters: 26 Years Since Ilford Tragedy
Today, Sunday 18 April, marks 26 years since PC Phillip Walters was fatally shot while on duty in Ilford.
Fallen Hero Honoured at Ilford Police Station
Detective Chief Superintendent Stephen Clayman paid tribute, saying: “It’s extremely important to remember fallen colleagues. Phillip made a huge impression in his short time at Ilford. Even after all these years, his loss is deeply felt, especially by those who knew him well.”
With the refurbishment of Ilford Police Station nearly complete, the force re-dedicated their conference room in PC Walters’ name. A small memorial event was held with his family and the Police Commissioner present.
The Ultimate Sacrifice
- PC Walters was just 28.
- He joined the Met in September 1993 and was posted to Ilford in February 1994.
- On 18 April 1995, during a late shift, he and PC Derek Shepherd responded to a disturbance on Empress Avenue.
- While trying to arrest a suspect, PC Walters was shot in the chest and died from his injuries.
- PC Shepherd was injured too, heroically wrestling the suspect to hold him until backup arrived.
East Area police send their thoughts to PC Walters’ family on this solemn anniversary.
