Operation Avara cracks down on violence in south east London with 145 arrests and 56 weapons seized

Police Unite to Tackle Violence at Transport Hubs

The Met Police teamed up with British Transport Police (BTP) and Kent Police in August 2019 to launch Operation Avara, a year-long mission targeting violence around key transport hubs in south east London and Kent.

Specialist officers from the Met’s South East Basic Command Unit joined forces with covert teams, knife arches, and drug-sniffing dogs to clamp down on crime. The initiative also included stop-and-search sessions and relied on officers trained to spot those with criminal intent. Met Special Constables provided vital support throughout the campaign.

Weapons Banished – 56 Knives and Guns Off the Streets

Since the operation kicked off, police have seized a shocking 56 weapons: three firearms, 36 knives, plus police-style batons and knuckledusters. In one dramatic stop, officers caught a man carrying a military-style commando knife, leading to his immediate arrest and a 12-week prison sentence.

The 145 arrests covered a host of serious crimes, including robbery, burglary, sexual assault, and possession of firearms.

Police Praise Teamwork and Promise Continued Action

“This work has been so successful that we now plan to run the operation proactively for the foreseeable future,” said Chief Inspector Mick Chattenton of the Met South East Command Unit.

“In August alone, we made 20 arrests for offences including possession of offensive weapons and drug supply. We’ll keep our presence strong at transport hubs across south east London.”

“Collaboration with BTP and Kent Police has been key, sharing intelligence and doubling our manpower to make communities safer,” he added.

Superintendent Chris Horton from British Transport Police said: “This operation shows the power of working together. Knife crime on railways is a top priority, and our use of knife arches and stop and search has stopped over 50 weapons from landing in the wrong hands.

“These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to keep everyone safe while travelling.”
