Tragedy struck on the evening of Sunday, 30 May, when two-year-old Greyson Birch was pulled from a reserve in Southampton. Emergency crews rushed to the scene at 8.21pm, with police, ambulance, and fire services all involved in the rescue.

Greyson was rushed to Southampton General Hospital but sadly died days later on Thursday, 3 June.

Police Probe Ends with No Charges

Hampshire Constabulary launched a full investigation into how Greyson ended up in the water. An 18-year-old man from Southampton, known to the toddler, was arrested on suspicion of neglect. However, after careful review of all the evidence, police have released the man with no further action.

Detective Inspector Matt Gillooly said: “Greyson’s death was a tragedy, and our thoughts remain with his family and everyone who knew him. Officers have conducted a thorough investigation into this tragic incident, and we want to thank everyone in the community who responded to our appeals and assisted investigators.

The criminal investigation has now concluded, and police will be working alongside the Coroner’s office in a continued effort to examine the circumstances surrounding Greyson’s death.”
