Man Arrested After Spate of Bin Fires Blaze through Sheffield
A 37-year-old man is in custody following a string of fiery attacks in Sheffield’s High Green last night. South Yorkshire Police and Fire crews tackled a series of deliberate bin blazes across the area from the evening into the early hours of 24 March.
Multiple Bin Fires Rage Across High Green
- 8:40pm: Dustbin set alight at a Cottam Road property
- 10:50pm: Another bin torched in Foster Way
- 12:50am: Fire breaks out at Potters Gate
- Shortly before 1am: Blaze deliberately started at door of a Thompson Hill home
- 1:50am: Wheelie bin burning in ginnel near Foster Way
Emergency services acted swiftly each time. No injuries were reported in the early fires, but the blaze at Thompson Hill forced several homes to evacuate. An 89-year-old woman living at the Thompson Hill address was rushed to hospital with minor injuries and remains under treatment.
Police Launch Major Arson Probe
The fire at Thompson Hill caused extensive damage before firefighters could contain it. Following the spate of attacks, police carried out a search and arrested a local man on suspicion of arson endangering life. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
Further fires believed linked to the suspect were reported in Potters Gate, Fosters Way, Sunny Bank Lane, and Hazelshaw Gardens, sparking increased patrols by police to reassure residents.
