Teen Turned Troubled to Triumph Avoids Jail

At just 15, Jahlil Kumar faced a chilling knock from Nottinghamshire Police’s CID that forced him to confront the harsh reality of prison. With his future on the line, the teen hit the brakes on a dangerous path and transformed his life.

From Near Exclusion to Award Winner

Jahlil, who once teetered on the edge of permanent school exclusion and battled trauma after losing loved ones, now has his sights firmly set on success. With support from youth worker Stephen, he flipped his script, setting up his own business and studying hard for his GCSEs.

His turnaround has earned him the prestigious Lyrico Steede Award, named after the murdered Bulwell teenager. The accolade is part of Nottinghamshire Police’s Live Our Best Life Awards, which celebrates youths who escape gang involvement, knife crime and criminal behaviour to inspire their communities.

Jahlil’s Candid Confession

“I realised I had to fix up or I’m going to land on the wing with a lot of other people, and I didn’t want a friend reunion in jail,” Jahlil said candidly.

He opened up about feeling lost at school, caught up in his dad’s repeated jail stints and bad company. “My life started to collide. I wasn’t going to lessons, messing about, smoking weed – it was all heading south,” he added.

The wake-up call came at 13 when police arrived at his school to arrest him. “That moment made me see the seriousness of my actions. I didn’t want to waste my life behind bars,” he said. Meeting Stephen last year helped turn things around.

Youth Worker Praises Stellar Progress

Stephen, Jahlil’s support worker, revealed how their first meeting came after Jahlil was caught with an adult smoking weed. “He arrived full of energy and charisma, and we built a relationship from there,” Stephen explained.

“Over 14 months, we tackled anger, communication, and school issues. I’ve seen him mature from a troubled boy to a focused young man ready to build his future.”

Stephen continued, “With the right support, Jahlil has blossomed. Now he’s ready to be anything he wants – an entrepreneur, a successful professional. The world is his oyster.”

Inspiration for Nottinghamshire Youth

The awards were created as part of Nottinghamshire Police’s Stephen Lawrence Day celebrations to recognise young people overcoming hardship and inspiring others. Youth outreach worker Romel Davis, who launched the scheme in 2021, hopes Jahlil’s story will motivate others.

“Jahlil’s journey shows you can turn your life around. If you’re heading down the wrong path, make better decisions. Change is possible,” Romel said.

With ambition to study electrical installation, pursue property development, and grow his resale business, Jahlil’s future looks brighter than ever. “Coming from the bottom, the only way is up,” he declared. His story is a powerful reminder that even the toughest starts can have a happy ending.
