Cybercrime Crackdown: FBI-led Sting Takes Down Genesis Market
A major international operation involving 17 countries, spearheaded by the FBI and Dutch National Police, shut down notorious cybercrime marketplace Genesis Market on 4 April.
Genesis Market: Hotbed of Criminal Activity
Genesis Market was a hackers’ playground, hosting roughly 80 million stolen credentials and digital fingerprints. It was the go-to spot for criminals wanting to defraud victims worldwide.
Mass Arrests in UK and Beyond
The UK saw 24 arrests, including two men aged 34 and 36 detained by the National Crime Agency (NCA) on suspicion of breaching the Computer Misuse Act and fraud offences. Globally, there were about 120 arrests, over 200 searches, and nearly 100 preventive actions.
Ongoing UK Crackdown and Public Warnings
The NCA is continuing its efforts with further arrests and warnings. Many users of the market will be contacted by law enforcement about their potentially illegal activity.
Rob Jones, NCA Director General NECC and Threat, explained how criminals use stolen data: “Fraudsters build trust with victims by exploiting personal details, then manipulate them to hand over money – often through romance or investment scams.”
