Still No Closure 20 Years On: The Vanishing of Vulnerable Teen Charlene Downes
Charlene Downes disappeared on a night in Blackpool nearly two decades ago. Just 14 and young, she vanished on 1 November 2003 and has never been found.
The Last Time Charlene Was Seen
On that fateful Saturday, Charlene was with a female friend. Around 10.30pm, she was spotted alone at the top of an alleyway off Abingdon Street, Blackpool.
A white male chef living and working in the alleyway confirmed seeing her there that evening. Since then, Charlene’s whereabouts remain a mystery.
Police Plea: New Witnesses Could Crack The Case
“We have never given up trying to work out Charlene’s last movements,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Webster, who’s led the probe for seven years. “Seventeen years on, we’re still asking for anyone who knew Charlene or saw her around that time to come forward. Someone out there has vital information.”
“No matter how small you think your information is, please share it. It could be the missing piece that uncovers what happened to Charlene.”
He appealed directly to those who visited the alleyway that night, describing the location as an entry from Abingdon Street serving businesses on Talbot Road and Clifton Street.
Massive Manhunt and £100,000 Reward Still Active
The investigation ranks as one of Lancashire Constabulary’s biggest and longest-running. A £100,000 reward remains on the table for info leading to Charlene’s recovery or the conviction of her killer.
In August 2017, a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder and remains under scrutiny as inquiries continue.
New Leads and Support for Survivors
The probe has unearthed other survivors of historical sexual abuse, with police urging anyone affected to step up. Time hasn’t dimmed the commitment to justice.
