Blackwall Tunnel Set for Major £3.66m Overhaul
Big Bucks for Big Fixes
The Blackwall Tunnel southbound is gearing up for a hefty £3.66 million refurbishment, reveals a new Freedom of Information request obtained by New Civil Engineer. The upgrade will see CCTV systems revamped and major carriageway repairs take centre stage.
What’s Getting the Upgrade?
The tunnel, linking East London and North Greenwich since 1997, last got a makeover in 2010. This time, the works include:
- Replacement of lighting and CCTV systems
- New messaging and lane control signs
- Replacement of missing cladding
- Comprehensive carriageway repairs tackling concrete, sealing, and road deck problems
Project Details and Timeline
Transport for London (TfL) revealed at their May 17 Programmes and Investments Committee meeting that £700,000 has already been spent on procurement. The contract for the project has been awarded to Tarmac Kier JV, with works due to kick off in May 2024.
TfL promises to keep disruption minimal by scheduling most closures during weekends and evenings – a relief for commuters who rely on this vital link.
What’s Next?
While TfL hasn’t disclosed how long the refurbishment will take, the upgrades aim to boost safety and smooth travel for thousands of daily users. Stay tuned for updates as London’s trusty Blackwall Tunnel gets a much-needed facelift.
