BBC’s Nicky Campbell Reveals Harrowing School Abuse at Edinburgh Academy
BBC presenter Nicky Campbell, 61, has opened up about the brutal sexual and physical abuse he witnessed at Edinburgh Academy, saying it left a “profound effect” on his life. The revelations came during the latest episode of his BBC Sounds podcast, Different, which aired on Wednesday.
Beaten by a Teacher, School Covered It Up
Campbell detailed how he was viciously beaten by a teacher who was a prominent member of the school’s scripture union. “My mother pursued it as far as she could and received a grovelling apology from the man involved,” he said. “But she was essentially stonewalled and the school hushed it up.”
He added, “Those were different times, and I’ve carried that with me my entire life.”
Witnessing Worse Abuse Behind Closed Doors
The former Watchdog and Top of the Pops host also revealed he witnessed horrific sexual abuse of fellow pupils by another man at the school. “I can’t describe it here, and I’ll never be able to unsee it,” Campbell said. “We all knew this man was a predator and a sadist, but we never told anyone.”
Reflecting on why they stayed silent, Campbell mused, “My schoolmates and I now discuss it with contempt, disbelief, and incomprehension that such a thing happened in plain sight and nothing was done.”
Abuser Still Alive but Untouchable
Journalist Alex Renton, who spoke with Campbell on the podcast, revealed the alleged abuser is still alive but cannot be named due to legal restrictions. Campbell explained his decision to come forward: “I chose to speak out to bring this man to justice for the abuse he committed.”
Edinburgh Academy Apologises and Promises Change
Edinburgh Academy issued a statement to the BBC expressing deep regret over the alleged incidents and offering a “wholehearted” apology to those affected. “We have worked closely with the relevant authorities, including Police Scotland, on their investigations,” the school said.
“Things have changed dramatically since the 1970s. We now have robust safeguarding measures in place, with child protection training central to the Academy’s ethos.”
Campbell’s full account and discussion with Renton can be heard on Different With Nicky Campbell on BBC Sounds.
